This course is a comprehensive multi-disciplinary course for clinicians (doctors, nurses and allied health professionals) wanting to gain competence, or have an update, in the medical assessment of children and young people referred for alleged sexual abuse.
It is suitable for a wide range of professionals who provide sexual assault services to children and adolescents. These include General Practitioners, Nurses / Nurse Specialists / Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Trainees or Consultants in Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, General Surgery or any other specialty where a clinician may provide some aspect of care after an episode of alleged or suspected sexual abuse. Although there are parts of the course material which are very medically focused (such as a very thorough grounding in normal and abnormal anatomy), most of the course would be of value to any allied health professional (such as a social worker or psychologist) who is working (or planning to work) as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing health services to children and young people who have experienced sexual abuse.
For many years, approximately half of our registrants have come from Australia, and their consistent feedback has been that the course is very useful for Australian professionals practising in this area. We believe the same would be true of health professionals practising anywhere in the world, but particularly anywhere in the Pacific or South-East Asia.

Registration Includes:
- Online access to approximately 20 hours of eLearning (eLearning modules and recorded webinars). This includes the epidemiology of child and adolescent sexual abuse in Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia; child sexual behaviour and the presentation of child sexual abuse; normal and abnormal genital anatomy; sexual abuse in males; medical assessment (taking a history); medical examination (principles and practice); working with adolescents; forensic examination; writing reports and formal statements; preparation for court; introduction to the courtroom from a Crown Prosecutor with advice on giving evidence in court; recorded examples of giving evidence in court; privacy law and disclosure and the Oranga Tamariki Act (the statutory child protection legislation in Aotearoa New Zealand). There will be the facility to ask questions as you work through the online learning, which will be answered through the online learning Q & A function and/or through the live Q & A sessions during the live online course.
- Online access to the eLearning will continue until 30 June 2024, when it will be downloadable as high quality pdfs.
- A two-day programme builds on the online pre-Learning and focuses both on reinforcement of key messages from the pre-Learning, and interactive sessions which give registrants the opportunity to engage with the faculty in real time and delve into areas which we believe are best addressed in live interactive learning. Such areas include integrating Tikanga Māori cultural perspectives into sexual assault care, trauma-informed care, multi-agency collaboration, self-care and an opportunity to volunteer to give evidence-in-chief and be cross-examined in a live “Reality Court” session.
- The programme (except for Reality Court) will be recorded and available online through the course website until 30 June 2024.
